Boat Propeller Damage and Performance Impact

As gas prices continue to creep up we are getting more and more enquiries from customers on how to improve the fuel efficiency of their engines. One of the leading causes of decreased performance can be a damaged prop blade. This can happen when the leading edge of the propeller has been damaged by running through sand or gravel. For optimum performance, the propeller blade edge should be filed smooth. There should be no dings or chips as these imperfections in the leading edge can cause air bubbles and cavitation in the blades of the propeller and reduce performance by reducing the efficiency of the propeller.

If the blade is too damaged it will have to be replaced as running a prop that is out of balance from damaged blades can reduce performance and damage the foot of your motor. The result is increased costs at the gas pump or  the repair shop! Inspect your prop regularly! It will save you money and ensure your boat is performing properly.

The Piranha propeller with the replaceable blade system is a great choice for your next prop as you can replace one damaged blade at a time for a fraction of the cost of replacing or repairing an entire aluminum or stainless steel propeller.

Piranha Propellers are manufactured to fit all the major manufacturers of outboard and sterndrive engines from 9.9HP to 280 HP, ranging in years from 1972 to 2020. Use our Piranha Prop Finder or call us at 1-866-621-7767 to find the solution for your next prop.
